A routine Ranji Trophy Group ‘A’ affair, between Karnataka and Haryana, has been given a welcome twist.
The presence of ace batsman Virender Sehwag, who retired from international cricket on Tuesday, is sure to create an unexpected buzz around the contest.
Sehwag was not present during Haryana’s training session here on Wednesday, but the team manager, Ajay Gupta, confirmed that he will lead the side when action starts on Thursday.
The 37-year-old, who has recorded nearly 17,000 international runs in a ground-breaking career, is expected to fulfil his Ranji Trophy commitments until the end of this season. Every innings he plays from here on, therefore, is to be viewed as a must-see event.
Bottom of the group
Sehwag’s teammates, who went about the pre-match practice routine in earnest, will no doubt be desperate to lift themselves, in order to give their star player a fitting farewell. The season so far has been disappointing, with Haryana lying at the bottom of the group.
A four-wicket loss to Delhi followed a draw against Maharashtra has left the side with just a solitary point. With scores of 92, 37 and 51, Sehwag has done his bit to force the desired results.
“We are looking for an outright win, but depending on how the pitch plays over the course of the next four days, we will look at securing the first-innings lead first,” said Haryana coach Surendra Bhave.
Karnataka, meanwhile, has had a steady, middling campaign. Three outings have all resulted in draws, with the defending champion getting the better of the first-innings battle on two occasions.
Vinay Kumar and his men sit in fourth place with seven points, and while it is not time to push the panic buttons yet, an urgency to register a few wins has set in.
The pitches used, primarily batting friendly, have not helped. Vinay is hopeful that the SDNR Wadiyar Ground proves to be different.
“We have asked for a green wicket, and I hope that it stays the same on all four days. Sometimes, when the pitch is flat, the bowlers get frustrated. But if we want to win, the bowlers have to bend their backs and take 20 wickets,” he said.
