Par-3 contest an ideal way to relax before main event

Anirban Lahiri, Apr 08, 2016
The Masters has teed off as I send this dispatch. But it will be late night back home as the first round gathers momentum and daylight will be appearing in India by the time I am through with the first round.

As usual, the main tournament was preceded by the Par-3 contest, which is so much fun. I enjoyed my first appearance last year and it was the same this year. Last year I  had picked three-time Master champion Nick Faldo’s brains during a chat and this year I was paired with him during the Par-3 contest. The third player in the group was Angel Cabrera, another past Masters winner.

Faldo was having a whale of a time and he was playing rather well and giving the crowds a lot to cheer and interacted with them so well. He was the star, as he is usually is. While he holed some great putts, I let Neeraj have a go on the 9th and he nearly holed it! There was a big shout and the crowds loved it.

Talking of holes-in-one, which is always a rarity, even in Par-3 contest, this edition produced a bonanza. There were no less than nine of them. The best was Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, who were paired together. On the fourth hole, it was Thomas who sent the fans into raptures with an ace.

On the very next shot, Fowler holed his tee shot, for what may be the first instance of two player getting holes-in-one one after another in the same group at the Par-3 at Masters.

Overall, a fun day and an ideal one to relax before the first big Major of the year. Its back to serious business tomorrow. I am feeling good and am raring to go. I have had the right amount of practice and am looking at a good week.
