Pune look for Dhoni magic
Sidney Kiran, Bengaluru, Apr 6, 2016, DHNS:
Formed after powerhouse Chennai Super Kings and inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals were handed a two-year suspension, debutants Rising Pune Supergiants’ every step will be keenly watched and they would be eager to make a strong first impression.
Obviously they’ve got a complete fresh group of players but a few of them are an accomplished lot internationally and they would be determined to put in a solid collective effort.
MS Dhoni, who will be seen playing in a non-CSK jersey for the first time in his IPL career, has been handed the responsibility to guide the team and the Indian limited overs skipper would be relishing the latest challenge on his hands.
The undisputed leader in the CSK camp, Dhoni had his trusted lieutenants serving for him, making his job much easier. With only Ravichandran Ashwin, Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel among the major names picked from the CSK set-up, Dhoni has a hard task. He first needs to piece together a strong starting XI and ensure the entire squad blends well at the earliest.
By the looks of it, Pune possess a good batting line-up but lack big-hitters lower down the order. Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Steve Smith and Kevin Pietersen lend a solid feel at the top and middle but with just MS Dhoni, Mitchell Marsh and Thisara Perera being seasoned names in the lower order, the major names have to take more responsibility.
Another key department where they appear short is bowling. Off-spinner Ashwin and Ishant Sharma are the only major names in their ranks while RP Singh and Irfan Pathan haven’t set the stage on fire in the recent past. Depending on who plays on the day, a lot will be expected from the foreign imports Morkel, Marsh and Perera.
The squad: MS Dhoni (capt), Ankit Sharma, Baba Aparajith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Murugan Ashwin, Ankush Bains, Rajat Bhatia, Scott Boland, Deepak Chahar, Ashok Dinda, Faf du Plessis, Peter Handscomb, Jaskaran Singh, Mitchell Marsh, Albie Morkel, Ishwar Pandey, Irfan Pathan, Thisara Perera, Kevin Pietersen, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma, RP Singh, Steve Smith, Saurabh Tiwary, Adam Zampa.
IPL record: Pune are making their debut this season.
