India name Jr WC squad

Bengaluru, Nov 19, 2016, DHNS:

India announced their squad for next month’s FIH Junior World Cup on Friday but didn’t name the captain for the 16-team bash which kicks off in Lucknow on December 8.

Roelant Oltmans, the High Performance Director, named the 18-member squad that includes the likes of Harmanpreet Singh, Harjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Vikas Dahiya who have already made it to the senior team this year.

Dahiya is expected to be the first choice goalkeeper of the side, while the defence is expected to revolve around Harmanpreet and Varun Kumar.

Harjeet, Manpreet and Santa Singh are likely to be the regulars in the midfield, while it will be interesting to see who the management goes with in the striker’s role, with all the six forwards displaying quality performances at the four-nation tournament in Spain and the Australian Hockey League recently.

Oltmans said versatility was a factor that influenced the selection. “Versatility is definitely one of the main reasons behind picking this team,” he said.

“I think, you really have to look beyond what’s there with you. What if you need that extra man in the midfield, or an extra man in the forward line. Now we have a Santa (Singh) and Sumit who have played as defenders in the past. And likewise, Simranjeet has been in the midfield. So that comes in handy.

“You have to look at various possibilities. You have look at guys who can play in various positions in case there’s an emergency and that’s what we have done,” explained the Dutchman, who along with  strategic coach Roger van Gent, senior team skipper PR Sreejesh and goalkeeping coach Dave Staniforth will be a part of the support staff.

The team will leave for Lucknow on Wednesday and will play friendly games against Argentina (December 2) and Netherlands (December 5) ahead of the World Cup.

The squad: Goalkeepers: Vikas Dahiya, Krishan B Pathak; Defenders: Dipsan Tirkey, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Vikramjit Singh, Gurinder Singh; Midfielders: Harjeet Singh, Santa Singh, Nilakanta Sharma, Manpreet, Sumit; Forwards: Parvinder Singh, Gurjant Singh, Armaan Qureshi, Mandeep Singh Ajit Kumar Pandey, Simranjeet Singh; Stand-by: Hardik Singh, Sumit Kumar.
