India vs England, 1st Test - Live Cricket Score, Commentary
Series: England tour of India, 2016-17 Venue: Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot Date & Time: Nov 09-Nov 13, 09:30 AM LOCAL
Alrighty, England are off to a fabulous start on their Indian sojourn. Nobody had given them a chance, especially after their loss to Bangladesh and Ashwin's success in home conditions, but they have come out firing. The batting is deep and looks more than capable of handling Ashwin and Co., while the bowling has all the variations to cause concerns to any opposition. India, on the other hand, have to rethink their strategy. They can't rely on Ashwin all the time for wickets, the likes of Jadeja and Mishra have to chip in. One thing this Test has ensured is that, there won't be dull days in the next four Tests. That's all for now. See you all during the second Test, which starts on Thursday (November 17). Till then, goodbye and take care!
Before leaving, here are a few stats from what turned out to be an exciting Test in the end, thanks to our stats editor, Deepu Narayanan
* Alastair Cook went past Don Bradman's tally of 29 hundreds. With his fifth Test ton in India, he now has the most hundreds by a visiting batsman in India
* Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes notched up hundreds in just their first Tests in India
* Adil Rashid's match figures of seven for 178 is the third best figures for a spinner playing in his first Test in India
* Ravichandran Ashwin conceded 226 runs in the match, the most he has conceded in a Test match in India
* Alastair Cook became the first England player and the fourth overall to score 1000 Test runs in India
* The 182-run opening stand between Cook and Hameed is the highest opening stand for England in India
* The draw breaks a series of five consecutive wins for India at home, the last drawn match in India was in Bengaluru, against South Africa, in November, 2015

Moeen Ali: "Very good pitch. Obviously we were three down at lunch, to get stuck in, I really enjoyed batting with Rooty. We feel like we prepared really well and it was good finally to get out and play a game. In international cricket you need to vary your pace, something that I have developed in recent times. I think they bowled very, very well. Ansari didn't go for many runs and Rash (Rashid) picked up the wickets. The boys are confident after this game. I thought we played spin very well throughout the match, especially today. We had four hundreds which was very encouraging and a brilliant debut from Hassy (Haseeb Hameed)."
Moeen Ali is the Man of the Match. The all-rounder scored a hundred in the first innings and picked up three wickets in the game.
Kohli: "Good opportunity to find out new things about your game. That is what I spoke to Jadeja as well. It's a situation, can't get better than that to find another aspect of your game. Especially in Test cricket, we have been a positive side and played for a result. To play against the momentum, it requires skill. It is very important to convince yourself that you can get through those tough periods. You trust your defence and trust that you can negotiate anything that is thrown at you. We could have been better on day one and day two. We dropped five catches and the opposition can take the game away from you. England are a side that we are not taking for granted. Sometimes these things happen and good to not give away a result at the start of the series. They [spinners] bowled on the first two days, where the wicket was really good to bat on. Not taking anything away from the England bowlers, but with 540 on the board it's a different ball game. We need to correct the areas before going to Vizag. There are a lot of positives that we can take. Anything happen in Test cricket. We have the batting line up to score 500 and if we had scored, the opposition would have felt the pressure. Credit to England for applying in the second innings as well and as I said we are not taking them for granted."
Cook: "Really tough five days. We played some good cricket. It was a good toss to win, but you still got to score. In India if you get 530, you usually win. It was a really good cricket wicket. Really proud of the lads for not allowing India to score quickly. To keep them to 480, we bowled really well. The way Hass (Hameed) played in the second innings was brilliant. You are always in the game. We wanted to bat them out of the game. There were only two chances, one was us winning and the other was drawing the game, and that can make you do funny things. In the end, they held on. It was really flat for the first three days and turned more and more, but people still managed to score runs. It turned out of the rough for both left and right-handers. Rajkot was a great Test match. It's quite a case [referring to his love affair with India]. Hopefully I can add to that. Brilliant knock from Hameed. I thought the way he played, it was absolutely brilliant. You don't want to put too much pressure on him. I thought all our spinners bowled really well. Adil stepped up to another level. This is a game where all three of them can be proud of."
Root: "Slight frustration, but at the same time we gave a really good go. Credit to the way Cook and Hass (Haseeb Hameed) played to set that chance up and give us an opportunity to try and win the game. Fair play to India for making it a bit tricky for us. We should make sure that we put the hard work in and start again at Vizag. Definitely a lot of guys can take a lot of good stuff out of this game. It is a fresh start and we should make sure we are on it from ball one. It will be completely different conditions, but we are doing some really good stuff at the moment. Adil bowled really well today. In that 50-odd overs we gave our everything and you can't ask for more than that. That second innings scorecard does not reflect our effort on this wicket. The top-order played outstandingly well to get as much as we did. It is about doing it over and over again."
So, where was the contest really killed? With a mere five sessions expected to miraculously produce a result, it seemed too wishful in the first place. But every situation had England holding the aces, they made short work of the Indian tail, batted on at a seriously strong run-rate and were also helped by famed Indian spinners refusing to turn up. Was the typical captaincy of piling on the runs and then ensuring that one result was wiped out and hence the declaration over an hour late? Or was it really the surface's refusal to crumble over the first three days? Nevertheless, a contest, a much needed one after years is what ensured on Indian soil. And it sure spices up the remainder of the winter.
Battered, bruised and scarred in the neighbourhood, the complete absence of quality spinners as many pointed out and the best seamer sitting out, anything more than avoiding a 5-0 result would have seemed like a moral victory. And Rajkot has given them the boost right away, the role Ahmedabad executed to perfection the last time around. Not a bad way to welcome yourself into the history books with more than 1000 runs in the first two innings with a strip having the green of Lord's, the cracks of Perth but the behaviour typically Indian. The two memories of this game have to be that of the two local families, the Pujaras with their jubilation on getting a review in Che's favour and the Hameeds swelling up with pride with smiles, tears and high fives on their 19-year old getting to a half-century on debut.
MOUTH-WATERING. The fight for the draw was all it took for the crowd to come in and find their voice. Not the run fest over the last four days. And none of us in the end have any more nails left to chew. Over the entire course of the Indian history, they have been excellent hosts to the English, not just on the cricketing field. And it required them to come back after four long years to throw us back to memories of what milking centuries in India was all about, what the famed Indian paradises looked like and what survival on the fifth day meant. Or rather what a five-day Test match was in reality. In what has been the first draw since Nagpur 2012 in India in Tests where the weather has been kind enough to let the match last beyond a day, it showed the world an avatar of Virat Kohli, not that of the master chaser but that of a match saver.
Rashid shakes hands with Kohli and finally Cook decides to call it off. So, the first Test between India and England ends in a draw. The visitors look a happy bunch as they walk off the field. Kohli and Jadeja look like two relieved men. The Indian dressing room breathes a sigh of relief and slowly make their way out to greet the batsmen. What is a Test match without the Indian team creating a bit of drama! It was a straightforward equation - bat out a minimum of 49 overs to draw the game, but there they were battling it out with only four wickets in hand.

34.5
Zafar Ansari to Kohli, no run, very full and Kohli works it away to mid-wicket
34.4
Zafar Ansari to Kohli, no run, once again textbook forward defence from the Indian skipper
Kohli just walks down the wicket and does some gardening. A slip, FSL and leg slip waiting for anything from the bat..

Zafar Ansari to Kohli, no run, tossed up on off, Kohli presses forward and smothers any turn on offer

Zafar Ansari to Kohli, no run, too full and on leg-stump, turned to short mid-wicket

Zafar Ansari to Kohli, 2 runs, drifting onto the pads, nurdled behind square on the leg-side, he is quick between the wickets and comes back for the second before the ball is hunted down
Zafar Ansari [4.0-1-19-0] is back into the attack
Time for drinks. The last hour of play, 15 overs left, will both teams shake hands? England will surely want a few more overs at these two before calling it quits. It has been a mad hour's play. Vijay prodded forward and fell pray to Rashid's extra bounce for the second time in the game. Rahane's poor shot selection saw his downfall. Since then, this pair has seen off some very nervy moments. Dharmasena signals to the scorers that the last hour of play begins. England throw their last dice - Ansari to have a crack..

Moeen Ali to Ashwin, no run, stifled appeal for LBW. Ashwin plunges forward and uses his pad to block. The impact was outside off and once again umpire Gaffaney had to make a call whether he was playing a shot. He reckons Ashwin does and gives it not out
33.5
Moeen Ali to Ashwin, 2 runs, shortens his length and Ashwin is comfortable with that length, opens the bat face and directs it square on the off-side. He called for two and Kohli was more than happy to oblige
33.4
Moeen Ali to Kohli, 1 run, gets close to the pitch of the ball and wrists it to long-on
33.3
Moeen Ali to Kohli, no run, LBW appeal albeit a late one from Moeen Ali and umpire Chris Gaffaney got it spot on once again. Kohli does not offer a shot and is struck in line with middle. However, the ball was turning too much, would have gone down leg

Moeen Ali to Kohli, no run, flatter in trajectory and on off, Kohli is assured in his back foot defence

Moeen Ali to Ashwin, no run, oh now he's changed the angle again, back over the wicket. Flighted delivery outside off stump, Ashwin tries to defend bat close to pad, but it hit him on the pad, impact outside off though
This change of angle from Mo brings LBW in play, but the ball will miss the rough and pitch on the good portion of the pitch, meaning it might not misbehave much

29.3
Moeen Ali to Ashwin, FOUR, overpitched and punished. Very full and outside off stump, Ashwin leans forward and crashes the drive through cover
29.2
Moeen Ali to Ashwin, no run, oh another close one and England review for LBW. Did he play the shot? The first question the third umpire asked umpire Chris Gaffaney was whether the batsman intended to play a shot, "yes" was the answer, but to me, it appeared as if Ashwin wasn't offering a shot. Hawk-Eye showed umpire's call on impact and it was just clipping the top of leg stump, not good enough to overturn the on-field call. If the on-field umpire thought that no shot was offered, Ashwin could have been on his bike
29.1
Moeen Ali to Ashwin, no run, oh what's happened there? Ashwin is hit on the pad, they think about the review, meanwhile Broad bumps into the umpire, review not taken, impact outside off stump. Was Ashwin offering a shot? The umpire thinks so and that is why he gave that not out on impact with the pad

Moeen Ali to Rahane, out Bowled!! Oh my word! What is Rahane doing? Has he hit a bad patch? Struggled in the ODIs against New Zealand and he's now played two really bad shots in this Test match. Yes, the ball kept low and that was unfortunate for the batsman, but why would you want to go back to cut when there's alarming amount of turn and bounce on offer for the off-spinner? Surely, England can do this now. They will believe! Rahane went back to play the cut, the ball hit the crack and turned square, although it was headed down the leg-side, it deflected off the pad and disturbed the sticks. You can say bad luck as the ball was originally not heading towards the stumps, but Rahane pays the penalty for wrong choice of shot. 71/4. Rahane b Moeen Ali 1(5)

Welcome back for what surely is the final session of the game. Can England pull off a dramatic win? An Indian win is practically ruled out, although mathematically possible. Loved the way Woakes bowled with the new ball. You never know, something like that could provide a bit of inspiration for the rest of the team. Spinners will be the key and all eyes on Rashid as he gets ready to begin proceedings. Slip, short leg and leg gully in
Tea, Day 5: Having weathered the storm after Gambhir's dismissal in the second over, Vijay and Pujara looked on course to take India to safety at tea. However, Adil Rashid was brought on and he struck in his second over albeit a lucky one. The ball had pitched outside leg and Pujara opted not to review it. So, that wicket has left the match still open. Kohli has just joined Vijay and if the duo can see off another hour of the England spinners, then both captains might shake hands and call it evens. Join us for the final session of the game in 15 mins..

4.4
Broad to Vijay, no run, ambitious from Vijay. Sees a short ball and goes for the pull shot. Does not get it off the meat of the bat, skews off the inside edge and then lobs off his body. The ball falls short of the man at FSL. Hameed tried to turn his head away as he saw the batsman attempt an aggressive shot, hence he couldn't react in time to grab the catch after realising that Vijay had mis-hit. You can't blame him for he's standing very close and the cricket ball can hurt you badly

Broad to Vijay, no run, good length ball on off. Vijay gets his pad and bat together towards the line of the ball and defends

Woakes to Gambhir, out Caught by Root!! Woakes bowled without luck in the first innings, he will not remain wicketless in this innings. Poor technique from Gambhir though, this was banged in short and held its line outside off.
