Mesfen claims Midnight Marathon

Worku grabs top honours in the women's full marathon
Night is day Participants hit the road in the ninth SBI Bengaluru Midnight Marathon.


 Mesfen Melse Balcha won the men’s full marathon in the ninth SBI Bengaluru Midnight Marathon which was dominated by runners from Ethiopia here.

Mesfen timed two hours and 23 minutes and 52 seconds to emerge winner, warding off his rivals with a spirited run to the tape after a gruelling competition.

Samuel Waithaka Maina of Kenya finished behind Mesfen, clocking 2:31:26 while India’s Santhosh claimed the third spot in 2:33:27.

Hailemariyam Rahel Worku claimed the women’s full marathon, followed by Hirawati Patel and Mallika K N, both from India. The organisers were unable to provide the timings of the winners.

Dego Byessa of Ethiopia won the men’s half-marathon, clocking 1:05:06. Kenya’s Samuel Muhuthu narrowly missed out on the top place, finishing in 1:05:08 for the silver while Ermiyas Yemata of Ethiopia took the bronze in 1:08:14.

Ethiopians also dominated the women’s half-marathon, with Gubachew Eshete topping the field in 1:26:37, followed by her compatriot Hiwot Adenew.

Mikyias Yemata of Ethiopia won the men’s 10K race in 30:07, finishing ahead of India’s Srinu (32:16) and Molla Alemu (32:37) of Ethiopia.

Hiwot Adenew emerged the winner in the women’s 10K race in 38:14, leaving behind Soreti Anberbir (41:50) and Kat Eidmann (43:54) in silver and bronze positions.

Organised by the Rotary Bangalore IT Corridor, the event attracted over 11,000 runners across various categories.
