In a contest where fortunes kept fluctuating, defending champions Karnataka displayed great team effort to pull off a 15-run victory via VJD method over Gujarat in their rain-affected Group ‘B’ encounter here at the Alur (1) ground on Monday.

Manish Pandey (94 n.o.) was finally back among runs while opener Mayank Agarwal slammed a crucial 58 as Karnataka reached a decent total of 233 for eight in 50 overs.

In response, Gujarat squandered a 55-run opening stand between Smit Patel (25) and Priyank Panchal (52) to be reduced to 102 for four in 27.4 overs. But Skipper Axar Patel (27) and Panchal threatened to take the game away from the hosts with a fifth-wicket stand of 58 runs.

On the last ball of the 40th over, Axar came forward to a flighted delivery from J Suchith only to lose balance and miss the delivery and an alert Sadiq Kirmani completed a sharp stumping. Light drizzle forced the umpires to then stop the proceedings and when play resumed after 26 minutes, the innings was reduced to 44 overs. Chasing a revised target of 205, Gujarat lost the plot and folded for 189.

Karnataka made two changes, bringing in Shreyas Gopal and debutant Praveen Dubey in place of Aniruddha Joshi and S Arvind. The spin trio of Praveen (1/26), Shreyas (2/33) and Suchith (2/25) bowled well in tandem.

With the win, Karnataka gathered four points and the hosts will next take on Jharkhand at Alur (2) ground on Tuesday.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Karnataka got off to a poor start as they lost opener KL Rahul (8) and wicketkeeper Sadiq Kirmani (6) cheaply. At 46 for two in the 13th over, Pandey joined forces with Agarwal and the duo played sensibly to keep Karnataka’s scoreboard moving.

Pandey and Agarwal, both naturally aggressive players, exhibited a measured approach and their calculative partnership was just what the doctor had ordered for Karnataka.

Agarwal’s hard-earned half-century came off 68 balls and included three fours. Gujarat finally found a way to break the 72-run alliance when skipper Axar got Agarwal caught at covers in the 30th over. At 118 for three, Karnataka needed Pandey to play a long innings and the experienced batsman did just that. After having thrown away his wicket in the previous two games, Pandey showed intent and avoided unnecessary risks. Fighting the humid conditions and a disciplined bowling unit, the 26-year-old slammed six fours and one six in his knock.

Pandey anchored another important stand of 42 runs with Stuart Binny (24) and just when Karnataka looked good to finish off with a strong total, the visitors struck wickets regularly to keep the game in balance.

After Binny’s dismissal in the 39th over, Praveen (10), Vinay (7) and Mithun (7) fell in quick succession even as Pandey held the innings from the other end. And to the home team’s bad fortume, on the final ball of the innings, Pandey managed to get a double but on field umpires disallowed the two runs as Pandey had ran on the pitch for the third time, following two warnings.

The hosts were also inflicted five-run penalty, which meant Gujarat would start their innings from five for no loss.
