Sarda, Sabeena complete hat-trick

 Delhi’s Dhruv Sarda and Sabeena Athica of Tamil Nadu completed a hat-trick of titles as they emerged champions in the 26th National Tenpin Bowling Championship here at BluO, Orion Mall, on Saturday.

While Sarda defeated beat two-time former national champion Shabbir Dhankot of Tamil Nadu 236-223 and 257-224 in the men’s final, top-ranked Sabeena trounced second seed Anukriti Bishnoi of Haryana 223-156. Sabeena thus became first woman to win a hat-trick of national championships with this being her ninth overall crown.

Earlier in the day, in the first match of stepladder round, third seed Akaash Ashok Kumar defeated Parvez Ahmed, the fourth seed, 194-197, 204-191.

Akaash faced second-placed and defending champion Sarda in the second match of the stepladder round and this evenly poised game went down to the last frame and ended up as a tie 214-214. 

The stepladder round was played on challenge the leader format where lower ranked player had to beat the higher ranked player in both games and if the higher ranked player beats the lower ranked player in game one, the match is won by the higher ranked player. Thanks to the format, Sarda progressed to the final where he defeated Dhankot.

In the stepladder round of women’s category, second placed Anukriti beat third placed Kashmira of Maharashtra 163-146. 

Special awards: Most promising player: Misam Rizvi (Karnataka, maximum number of scores above 225). Maximum number of scores above 200: Men: Shabbir Dhankot (Tamil Nadu, 10); Women: Sabeena Athica (Tamil Nadu, 5).

Highest score in single game: Men: Akaash Ashok Kumar (Karnataka, 268); Women: Anukriti Bishnoi (Haryana, 238).
