Yuvi beats Services, knocks Mumbai out

Mumbai finished its Group ‘A’ engagements with a seven-wicket victory over Hyderabad on Friday, but it was Tamil Nadu and Punjab which progressed to the quarterfinals. Centuries from Dinesh Karthik and Baba Aparajith and an impressive spell of left-arm spin bowling by Rahil Shah helped Tamil Nadu trounce Team Rajasthan by 252 runs, but it was Yuvraj Singh who took the cake with an unbeaten knock against Services. Chasing 324, Punjab rode on the southpaw’s 98* (83b, 8x4, 4x6) to register a three-wicket win. Both Tamil Nadu and Punjab had 20 points from six games, but the former’s superior runrate fetched it the top spot. Mumbai last won the domestic one-day title in 2006-07. This time, it won four league games, but that was not enough. Hyderabad posted 217/8, thanks largely to Hanuma Vihari’s 95 (104b, 7x4, 1x6), but the host was outplayed. Akhil Herwadkar (85, 122b, 7x4) and Shreyas Iyer (84, 84b, 4x4, 4x6) added 134 runs for the second wicket as Mumbai won the game with 5.4 overs to spare.
Ajinkya Rahane (31*, 31b, 2x4, 1x4), who scored a century in a losing cause against Rajasthan on Thursday, took Mumbai past the finish line. Mumbai suffered two losses in the tournament to finish in third place. It lost to Tamil Nadu by 26 runs in the second round of matches before going down to Rajasthan. The defeat it suffered at the hands of Rajasthan hurt Mumbai the most because it failed to defend 301. It was the journeyman, Rajat Bhatia, who spoilt Mumbai’s party with a belligerent unbeaten 94 off 71 bal
