The newly formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) was granted full membership by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) on Monday.
Following a unanimous approval, the BFI was inducted as one of AIBA's permanent members during the Extraordinary Congress at Montreux in Switzerland.

Complementing India’s comeback into the international boxing fold, AIBA has also decided to host its Annual Commissions meeting in India in February, 2017.

The decision also marks India’s formal re-introduction into the international boxing fraternity following a four-year suspension. “We are delighted that India is now a full member of AIBA. With this, our boxers will once again have the honour of competing under the Indian flag,” Ajay Singh, President, BFI said,
“BFI’s focus will be to develop the sport and ensure that our country wins laurels in boxing at the international level.”

The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) was suspended in December 2012 for “possible manipulation” in elections. Soon after Sports Ministry, too, derecognised the federation. It left the Indian boxers in lurch for four years before BFI was formed in September following fresh election in presence of observers from AIBA and Sports Ministry.

Following the suspension of IABF, Boxing India was formed in 2014 but it barely lasted a year and was voted out by the state units in 2015. Since its inception, the BFI has conducted National Championships for men and women, which concluded recently.

The absence of a National Federation severely hurt the progress of Indian boxing that had eight pugilists qualifying for the London Games. For the Rio Games, the number shrunk to mere three, and no Olympic medal.

Meanwhile, the AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu also congratulated BFI for organising and conducting the Nationals. The Indian delegation proposed to the AIBA President to jointly open and run a boxing academy in India. If accepted, the proposed academy would be jointly run by AIBA and BFI under the regulation of Government of India.
