Kohli finds no place in ICC's Test Team of the Year
Bengaluru: Dec 23, 2016, DHNS:

The red-hot batsman of 2016 has no place in the Test Team of the Year named by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday.
Virat Kohli may have made tons of runs this year in all formats of the game, but thanks to a quirky selection procedure that takes into consideration performances from September 14, 2015, to September 20, 2016, the Indian Test captain misses out on the honour.
Instead, the team includes the likes of Australian Adam Voges, who excelled in early part of the year before slipping out of his national team, while Steve Smith, the top-ranked batsman in the world, has been named the 12th man.
Though Kohli made three double centuries this year, his record during the selection period was 451 runs in eight matches at an average of 45.10. In the calendar year, however, he has a total of 1215 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 75.93.
Strangely, Alastair Cook, who led England against India, is the captain. Off-spinner R Ashwin is the only Indian in the squad that includes four Englishmen and four Australians. During the 12-month period, Cook led England in 14 matches, with six victories, three draws and five losses.
The team was selected by a panel featuring Rahul Dravid, Kumar Sangakkara and Gary Kirsten. Ashwin had double delight in store at the ICC awards as he was named the winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for the International Cricketer of the Year as well as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year.
Ashwin is only the second Indian to win the two awards in the same year after Rahul Dravid, who claimed the honours in 2004.
Kohli, who does not lead India in the shorter formats of the game, was named the captain of the ODI Team of the Year that also features Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
Australian opening batsmen David Warner and quick bowler Mitchell Starc are the only players to feature in both the Test and ODI squads.
