'Toss played a crucial role'

Visakhapatnam, Dec 25, 2016, DHNS

R Vinay Kumar

After his team suffered a huge defeat in the quarterfinal to crash out of this edition of the Ranji Trophy, Karnataka skipper R Vinay Kumar felt the toss played a crucial role.
“The toss made a big difference. Had we bowled first even we could have contained them (Tamil Nadu) and the result would have been different. It was a difficult wicket to bat on, with a few balls kicking up,” said Vinay.

Vinay felt it’s unfair to blame the batsmen. “They tried their best and I will definitely not blame the batsmen in this game. Maybe the two run-outs in the second innings made a huge impact,” he said.

The 32-year-old all-rounder added that the luck factor didn’t favour his side in the game. “Had we bowled first they wouldn’t have scored more than 100 runs. Even when they batted the second time, we got three early wickets. Unfortunately I had a slight niggle when we bowled in the second innings. We put down a catch and I got a wicket off a no ball in the first innings. Overall, luck didn’t work in our favour,” he explained.

After beginning well, with four straight wins out of five, Karnataka experienced a stumble in the second half of the tournament. “We ended second in the league stage. Maybe, had we done better in the last phase of the league, we could have gone on top spot and the scenario could have been different,” he noted.

The captain said there were lot of positives to take from the season. “There are many positives. Especially the way K Gowtham performed. Even Kazi and Shreyas did well. Youngster David Mathias played well. He got just one game and the character and effort he showed in that match against Maharashtra was great. Abbas (Mir Kaunain) came good but couldn’t convert his knocks to big ones. Samarth (R) was very consistent,” he offered.

Vinay praised KL Rahul, whose fighting half-century was the lone bright spot in Karnataka’s second innings. “Rahul played in an attacking manner. Once you play at the international level, this level (domestic) becomes a bit easier and the confidence also gets higher,” he said.
