NEW DELHI, Dec 21, 2016, DHNS
Former world champion L Sarita Devi is all set to become the first Indian woman boxer to turn professional. She will be contesting as a professional boxer under the aegis of the Indian Boxing Council (IBC).
The 31-year-old Manipuri lightweight boxer (60kg) has signed a two-year deal with IBC’s commercial partners – Sporty Boxing Private Limited. “I was on a curve where one needed to make a crucial decision about the competitive playing career. I needed an opportunity to extend my playing career and finances to live up to my dream of promoting talent in Manipur,” said the bronze medallist in 2014 Asian Games that had ended in a controversy for her. She had protested against the jury's decision in her semifinal bout and refused to accept her bronze medal at the podium. It led to one-year suspension of Sarita from all AIBA events.
The Deputy Commissioner with the Manipur State Police, Sarita has been granted permission by her department and the State Home Department. The silver medallist at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, has already begun the training for the new stint.
“I am a professional boxer now. I have already started training as a pro. I am training hard. My first target is an Asian title in the next six months. My ultimate goal is to retire as a World Champion,” said Sarita who is inspired by great Muhammad Ali.
