Karnataka pair make an impact

Great camaraderie

KL Rahul and Karun Nair became the first pair of specialist batsmen from Karnataka to bat together in a Test match in over 18 years after Rahul Dravid and Vijay Bharadwaj had done so in October 1999 against New Zealand in Kanpur.
Before Rahul and Nair, Dravid and Bharadwaj were also the last two frontline batsmen from the State to feature in a Test in January 2000 in Australia in Sydney. Rahul and Nair added 161 runs for the fifth wicket as India finished the third here at 391 for four in reply to England’s 477 all out. While Rahul got out for 199, Nair was batting on 71.
Rahul and Nair go a long way back when they started playing together from the age of 11. That understanding, camaraderie and chemistry was obviously out there when they built the innings.
“It was very important to get that partnership for the team,” said Rahul. “Me and Karun have played our cricket together since we were 11. His family was here watching the game and both our families will be proud of watching us play together. It was their dream as well when we started playing cricket. We have done things together. I am very happy that Karun is still batting after getting his 50,” he noted.
The 2011-12 tour of Australia was the last time when Karnataka had three of their players in the squad with Dravid, Vinay and Abhimanyu Mithun travelling down under.
