There was an air of accomplishment and pride as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) awards for 2016 on Monday. The awardees received a cheque for Rs 50,000 and mementos at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, here.

Golfer S Chikkarangappa, 27th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, expressed the feelings of each and every one of the awardees when he described the feeling as ‘special.’

“It’s a special feeling to receive an award from the chief minister. This acts as a boost for us to go on to make our State and country proud in the coming years.”
“Being supported is very essential for us, apart from being talented,” he added.

The chief minister urged the sportspersons to aim for greater achievements.
“You should be proud of receiving this award but also need to push yourself to work harder and perform consistently at higher levels.

“The ultimate goal should be to participate in the Olympics and not restrict yourselves to State-level or National-level tournaments.”

“There has been a request from the KOA for more funds to be disbursed towards sport and we will make it happen provided it is on a result-oriented basis,” he said, promising to reward any sportsperson from Karnataka winning medals at the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

“Athletes who bring home a gold will be given Rs 5 crore and we will reward silver and bronze medallists with Rs 3 crore and Rs 2 crore respectively.”

Speaking at the event, Sports Minister Pramod Madhwaraj revealed his plans for a public-private partnership to enhance sport in Karnataka.

“We are looking at building a strong PPP and Corporate Social Resopnsibility (CSR plan) to help our athletes.

In addition to that, we are also increasing the number of synthetic tracks in the State from 13 to 15,” he said.

The KOA President K Govindaraj, while thanking the government for its financial support, revealed details of the State Games to be held next year.

“We have received Rs 3 crore from the government for the State Games, which will be held from February 3 to 10 in Hubballi,” he said.
